Academic Events


 Math Thinking Games Students will have the opportunity to apply logical thinking to play Set, Q-bitz, Equate and math dice.  Students will be part of a four person team, but will play each game independently against students from other districts.
Academic Quiz Bowl Students participate as part of a five-person team in a challenging, question-answer local event with other school districts throughout the Westmoreland County stressing general knowledge in a variety of areas.
Invention Convention Students work individually to apply problem-solving strategies to develop a practical invention. Students must create a model or drawing of the invention, and prepare a brief marketing strategy on a tri-fold poster board.  Winners will be eligible to participate in the state competition.
Language Arts Thinking Games Students will have the opportunity to apply logical thinking to play Quiddler, Scattergories, Scrabble and Boggle.  Students will be part of a four person team, but will play each game independently against students from other districts.
America Bowl  Students participate as a team in a challenging, question-answer local even with other school districts throughout the Westmoreland County stressing knowledge on America.
Celebration of Literature Event Participants must read the required novels and actively participate as a team member at the event. The selection of fiction novels include: The People of Sparks  by Jeanne DuPrau, Gathering Blue by Lowis Lowry, and Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. 
 Primary Celebration of Literature Event  Participants must read the required novel(s) and actively participate as a team member at the event. The selection of fiction novels include: The True Meaning of Smek Day by Adam Rex, The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau.

 Photography Competition  Students will have the opportunity to submit personal photography for judging in six categories including still life, family and friends, animals, action and nature’s way.
Amazing & Puzzling 5th grade students only: Students  use logic to solve a variety of number, word, language and spatial puzzles and mazes.
 "24" Tournament  Students solve “24” cards by utilizing the four numbers provided.  Each number will be used once and only once.  The numbers can be manipulated as needed through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to result in the number 24.
